- Ulcer is another name for a sore. The word can be used to describe sores on the outside of the body, as in "pressure ulcers" or bed sores. It's commonly used to describe sores on the inner lining of the stomach, which are called peptic or gastric ulcers. Ulcers lower down in the intestine are called duodenal ulcers.
