DASH
DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension and is an eating plan that combines lower fat food with modest amounts of meat, fish, poultry and nuts. The DASH eating plan includes two servings of low-fat dairy products daily, 10 servings of fruit and/or vegetables and minimal amounts of salt. It’s clinically proven to significantly reduce blood pressure.

Diabetes
Diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too little insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar), resistance to insulin, or both. In Type 1 diabetes, the body makes little or no insulin, and daily injections of insulin are required to sustain life. Without proper daily management, medical emergencies can arise. In Type 2 diabetes, which usually occurs in adulthood, the pancreas’ insulin production is insufficient to keep blood glucose levels normal, often because the body develops resistance to insulin.

Diaphragm
Diaphragm is the partition between the abdominal and chest cavities. When you breathe in, the diaphragm pulls down and the chest wall expands, letting air in. When you breathe out, the diaphragm comes back up, allowing the chest to compress and push air out.

Diastolic
Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure on the walls of the arteries when the heart is in the relaxation phase. It’s the second or lower number in your blood pressure reading, and is considered ‘high” if regularly over 90 mm Hg.

Dietician
Dietician is a health professional trained in diet, food and nutrition. Some work alongside doctors and nurses in clinics and hospitals, while others are in independent practice. They can advise on general lifestyle and nutrition and provide nutrition advice for special medical needs. A consultation can help you translate scientifically-sound nutrition advice into practical strategies that suit your lifestyle.

Dyspepsia
Dyspepsia (also called "acid stomach") is characterized by pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, bloating, belching and nausea. The causes of dyspepsia are unknown.
